Winter is Coming - How to Stay Safe
Scott Kakacek

WINTER is approaching, as early as Thursday!  Snow and freezing conditions can bring about both beauty and beastly challenges. Being prepared is crucial not only for comfort but also for your safety and the maintenance of your home and car. Here’s how you can tackle winter's icy grip effectively:

Prepare Your Home

  • Insulate Properly: Ensure your home is well insulated to keep the heat in and cold out. Check for drafts around windows and doors and seal gaps with weather stripping or caulk.
  • Maintain Your Heating System: Have your furnace serviced by a professional to ensure it’s working efficiently. Change air filters regularly and consider upgrading to a smart thermostat for easier temperature management.
  • Protect Pipes from Freezing: Wrap pipes in insulation sleeves and keep a trickle of water flowing through faucets to prevent freezing. Foster a warm environment by opening cabinets to circulate warm air around plumbing.

Car Care & Safety

  • Winter Tires are a Must: Equip your car with winter tires to enhance grip on snowy and icy roads. Check tire pressure regularly as it can fluctuate with temperature changes.
  • Keep an Emergency Kit: Prepare a winter emergency kit with essentials like blankets, a first-aid kit, an ice scraper, emergency flares, and snacks. A small shovel and a bag of cat litter or sand can help you gain traction if you’re stuck.
  • Batteries and Fluids: Ensure your car battery is functioning well, as cold weather can sap its strength. Keep fluids like oil, antifreeze, and windshield washer fluid topped up with winter-grade products.

Personal Safety and Health

  • Dress Appropriately: Layering is key to staying warm. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, followed by insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer to protect against snow and wind.
  • Stay Hydrated: Cold weather can be just as dehydrating as heat. Keep drinking water even if you don’t feel thirsty to maintain energy levels and wellbeing.
  • Monitor Weather Conditions: Keep an eye on forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather warnings. Stay informed to stay safe!

Winter can be harsh, but with proper preparation, you can enjoy the season's delights while staying safe and warm. Equip yourself, your home, and your car to face the chill head-on!

If you don't have to leave the house, stay home and keep safe.
