Who Needs Cybersecurity Insurance?
Scott Kakacek

Regardless of your business type, you are likely to transmit other people’s electronic data in the

regular course of your business. Data you transmit electronically—belonging to you and/or

others—can be breached in a single incident. Cybersecurity insurance protects your business if

that data is compromised.

Here are a few types of losses that may be covered by a cyber insurance policy:

  • “First-party” losses associated with damage to and restoration of the breached system, if the losses were caused by a covered event like a hack or virus.
  • “Third-party” losses arising out of claims against your business lodged by others whose data was compromised, like your customers, employees, or vendors.
  • Losses, like loss of income and/or expenses, resulting from a temporary shutdown or avoiding a temporary shutdown after a cyberattack.
  • Costs associated with bringing in an expert to help you restore or reconstruct your missing data.

These losses are not covered by a standard commercial property policy, because those are

intended to cover losses caused by a physical event (fire, etc.).
