Tips to Avoid Frozen Pipes
Scott Kakacek

Below-freezing weather may prompt you to pull out your gloves and heavy jacket. It should also prompt you to take the following steps to reduce the risk of frozen pipes in your home:

  • Allow a small amount of water to drip from your faucets to reduce the likelihood of your water freezing in the pipes, which can cause pipes to burst
  • If you have cabinets containing pipes, keep the cabinet doors open so the heat in the room can reach the pipes
  • Wrap or insulate pipes in uninsulated areas
  • Keep doors to uninsulated areas closed
  • Close off air vents located in crawl spaces so that pipes in crawl spaces are protected from cold air
  • Turn off valves to outside faucets and disconnect associated hoses
  • If you must leave your home for several days, set your thermostat to at least 65 degrees
