Thanksgiving Safety: Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Holiday
Scott Kakacek

Thanksgiving is a time of joy, family gatherings, and delicious meals. However, it also comes with its set of risks, from kitchen-related accidents to travel hazards. By following some essential safety tips, you can ensure that your Thanksgiving celebration is both enjoyable and secure.

Kitchen Safety

Stay Alert While Cooking: Kitchen fires are more common during Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. Always stay in the kitchen while you’re cooking, especially when frying, grilling, or broiling food. Use a timer as a reminder for items in the oven or on the stove.

Keep Flammable Items Away: Ensure that flammable items such as oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, and towels are kept away from the stove and other heat sources.

Child-Free Zone: Keep children at least three feet away from the stove. Make sure they stay clear of hot foods and liquids which can cause serious burns.

Travel Safety

Plan Ahead: If you’re traveling during the holiday, plan your trip in advance. Check the weather forecast and road conditions to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition by checking the tire pressure, oil levels, brakes, and battery. Keep an emergency kit that includes a first-aid kit, flashlight, blankets, and non-perishable snacks.

Avoid Distracted Driving: Pay attention to the road, avoid using your phone, and take regular breaks during long trips to stay alert.

Food Safety

Properly Thaw the Turkey: Thaw your turkey in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave—never on the counter. Follow safe thawing guidelines to avoid foodborne illnesses.

Cook to the Right Temperature: Use a food thermometer to ensure the turkey has reached an internal temperature of 165°F in all parts of the bird. This helps prevent foodborne illnesses caused by undercooked poultry.

Safe Storage: Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of serving. Label your leftovers with dates and consume them within three to four days.

Fire Safety

Use Caution with Candles: Keep candles away from decorations, curtains, and out of reach of children and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Check Smoke Alarms: Ensure that your smoke alarms are working properly by testing them before the holiday. Replace batteries if necessary.

Have an Extinguisher Ready: Keep a fire extinguisher in an easily accessible location in the kitchen and know how to use it in case of a small fire.

By taking these precautions, you can minimize risks and focus on what truly matters—enjoying quality time with loved ones and creating wonderful memories.
