Insurance For Home-Based Businesses
Scott Kakacek

I hope this BLOG post finds you well! I wanted to post a quick BLOG about home-based businesses and how those affect your insurance coverage. I’ve found many of my clients don’t realize the risks they face with having a small home-based business or working from home for their employer. The reality is your existing homeowners or auto insurance policy probably doesn’t cover all the new exposures you have now when working from your home.

And when I say home-based business, this includes lots of different things. For example, all of these could be considered home business activity, which may be excluded from coverage on your auto or homeowner policy:

  • Making and selling art, books, jewelry, clothing, or anything else on Etsy, at craft fairs, or in other ways
  • Delivering newspapers, walking dogs, or mowing lawns
  • Working remotely for an employer
  • Driving for Uber, Lyft, Doordash, or another delivery service
  • Pet boarding or pet sitting
  • Working on hobbies that generate income of $600 or more

The reality is that you don’t even need to be a business owner for your business activities to be included—working from home for your employer could be enough to potentially put you in a gray area.
