Holiday Party Safety
Scott Kakacek

It’s party season, and while parties offer opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones, they can also pose risks to property and health.

  • Drink alcohol in moderation.
  • Limit yourself to one drink per hour and alternate your alcoholic drinks with water and food.
  • If you feel even slightly impaired, let someone else drive you home, or call a taxi or ride-sharing service. You can always return to retrieve your car, but you can’t reverse the potentially deadly outcome of driving while intoxicated.
  • If you’re cooking all day, your kitchen could be a source of danger. Keep a household fire extinguisher on hand in case of a stove- or oven-related emergency.
  • Identify ahead of time where guests will put jackets and purses, and make sure that area is clear of items you want out of sight.
  • If you’re inviting young children, put away family heirlooms and expensive items that may attract kids’ attention.
  • Conceal holiday gifts and other valuables well before your guests arrive.
  • Make sure the inside and outside of the party area are well-lit, especially if the party is past dusk.
  • Clear the exterior of your home of excess fallen leaves, acorns, pinecones, or other debris to reduce your guests’ risk of injury. Pay special attention to sidewalks and curb areas, where guests may be expected to park their cars.
