Four Fast Facts: Insurance and Your College-Bound Child
Scott Kakacek

Ease your child’s transition to college by making sure your family is protected.

1. Health insurance. If your child has been on your health insurance, they can probably stay until

they’re 26. If they’re uninsured, talk to your insurance agent. Many colleges offer student health

insurance, or your child may be eligible for coverage through a government exchange. Once

they’re covered, confirm that in-network provider options are available near their school.

2. Property insurance. The valuables your child takes with them may be covered by your

homeowners’ or renters’ policy, but if they’re living in off-campus housing, they may need their

own renters’ insurance.

3. Auto insurance. Your premium could be affected if your child takes a vehicle to school. If they

leave the car at home, keep it insured with you and your child as drivers, so you can drive it

while they’re away, and they can drive it when they come home. Your agent may know of

premium discounts for cars owned by students living away from home or good student driver

discounts.

4. Life Insurance. If you don’t have life insurance, and your child needs your income to pay tuition,

you may want to talk to your agent about life insurance.

Finally, confirm with your agent that the scope of your existing policies is sufficient for your specific

circumstances.
